Easter. Much more than just a bank holiday weekend…

2019 begins and in the blink of an eye Easter arrives! It’s scary to think that mid-April means we’re one third into the year, but there’s no doubting that Easter is a special occasion that means something to almost everyone. There is, of course, the religious aspect of it which should never be ignored, but in more recent times the younger generation, in particular, marks the event with chocolate eggs and presents. And then there’s the bank holiday, which is always welcome…

Perhaps your workplace is closed until Tuesday, but even if it isn’t Easter Sunday is still a great occasion in one way or another. Religiously speaking, Easter is a Christian celebration for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the oldest and more important holiday in the Christian calendar, taking place from Good Friday to Easter Monday, with Easter Sunday falling in between.

Exactly when the holiday falls isn’t always consistent. The reasoning relates to the March equinox. In the Bible, Jesus held the last supper on the night of Passover, the Jewish festival. The beginning of Passover is determined by the first full moon after the vernal equinox, which can occur on any day of the week depending on the time zone. As this can vary within different time zones, the 14th day of the Lunar month is used instead and then Easter Sunday is hosted on the following Sunday.

This year it’s today, the 21st March.

For many, it is an opportunity to relax with family and take a break from work, though more common traditions relate to chocolate eggs! Collections and hunts are often arranged for the younger generation, whilst the Easter bunny delivering the eggs is a sight that we’re all familiar with. Just like Santa Claus on Christmas morning, the bunny ensures children all over the globe wake up to lots of chocolate eggs on the Sunday.

Perhaps you prefer to take part in something different on Easter, so be sure to let us know!
