Charity work never stands still here at Coinadrink and every so often we pledge our support for a ‘chosen charity’. It goes without saying that all charities help some great causes, so deciding on who to support is often a tough decision for us. But after some deep thought, close consultation with our employees (and a touching letter from the respected organisation that was well appreciated) we’re thrilled to announce that The Way Youth Zone is our chosen charity!
Who are The Way Youth Zone?
Despite perhaps not having the same leverage as some other charities out there, make no mistake that The Way Youth Zone is a truly excellent organisation in which its awareness is consistently growing. In short, the charity provide a place where young people can go and keep themselves entertained and out of trouble with the numerous activities that are hosted.
Based in Wolverhampton, its doors officially opened on Saturday 16thJanuary 2016. However, initial talks took place four years previous. Wolverhampton City Council, in partnership with a local business, saw the success of the ‘OnSide Youth Zone model’ in other towns and cities and wanted to provide something similar for the city of Wolverhampton. The benefits it would bring to the community would be massive, getting younger people off the streets doing something both meaningful and enjoyable.
Backed by successful entrepreneur Steve Morgan OBE, the Morgan Foundation, The Queen’s Trust and St James’ Place Foundation, the once-in-a-lifetime project was taking shape nicely. Upon launch in January 2016, the organisation has been able to offer young people aged 8 to 19 (or up to 25 with a disability) over 20 activities every night!
The Way promote themselves as ‘somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.’ Patrons include FBC Manby Bowdler, Jaguar Land Rover and Redrow and Wolverhampton City Council remain a great supporter.
Where are they located?
The Way Youth Zone is right next to the skate park in the city centre, on School Street between Little Brickkiln Street just off the Penn Road roundabout. The centre cost £5.5m to build and features a 3G outdoor pitch and an incredible indoor climbing wall. This has helped pave the way for over 3000 members and 120 visits a week!
The financial back story.
In short, £1.5m is required every year just to keep the doors open. Following the initial investment for capital costs from the supports listed above, the organisation now relies on support from donations from local businesses and individuals. This ensures they can continue to operate.
Why we decided to donate to The Way Youth Zone.
We decided to donate because it’s an excellent charity that covers an area we are passionate about. Wolverhampton is approximately 30 minutes from us and our support shows that we keen to improve not only the city but also the lives of the young people who live in it.
Julia Hackett, who is Head of Income Generation and Communication, sent us a touching letter about the charity and it really opened our eyes to the issues they are helping to solve. We soon got in touch and quickly became keen to show our support.
Just like with our previous chosen charities, we will donate to The Way through our customer care surveys, which is a great way for us to hear from our customers and implement any strategies that can improve our level of service for the future. In addition to our customer care surveys, we will also get involved with other incentives such as taking part in events hosted by both the charity and those that are bespoke to us.
We look forward to working with The Way and we are hopeful of it being a successful relationship!
