Brace yourself, because the new decade has seen a revolutionary breakthrough within the vending industry. Lavazza Professional has started the ball rolling in making today’s coffee cups more sustainable, focusing specifically on the Klix machines. The Eco Cup is the first in-cup coffee cup to be completely recyclable with normal paper waste. And it’s coming to all Klix machines from February 2020…
This is very exciting news for the vending industry and what it means for our environment. Right now, there are some staggering statistics that convey the problem Lavazza Professional are hoping to help fix with the Eco Cup.
The UK throws away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year, yet only 0.25% of these are recycled. But how can this be? You may think your paper coffee cup can be recycled, but a key material that is used in its production actually makes it near impossible.
Problematic Polyethylene.
They say the devil is in the detail. And that’s certainly the case here. Within your coffee cup hides a thin layer of plastic, known as polyethylene.
Whilst you may not have even been aware of its existence, polyethylene is the reason why your cup remains heat and leak proof. But whilst this works well for your hands, it’s a literal nightmare for our planet.
You see, today’s coffee cup requires specialist recycling facilities able to separate the polyethylene from the paper. And right now, there are only a small number of them in the UK.
So how is Eco Cup different?
Eco Cup throws away, if you’d pardon the pun, the need for polyethylene and is the result of years of research and development.
Instead, Eco Cup is unique in that it utilises a special patented water-based dispersion barrier board by Kotkamills that enables the cups to recycled with paper waste, such as office paper.
The paper is sourced sustainably managed forests, accredited by PEFC, and can be recycled into paper waste up to seven times. This guarantees a low environmental impact.
And even if it is incorrectly disposed of, its biodegradable nature ensures it will cause the environment no harm.
In fact, a study from Lavazza Professional suggests that switching to Eco Cup from a standard coffee cup can lead to a reduction in environmental footprint of over 63%.
With Eco Cup, Lavazza Professional have demonstrated a pro-active nature in developing a sustainable vending solution for the workplace.
This is a vital leap forward in the reduction of used cups being sent to landfill.
Are there any other changes I should know about?
None whatsoever, which makes Eco Cup even more impressive in that it still acts and works like any other coffee cup.
For now, the Eco Cup is available with only a select few Klix beverages. These are Lipton Tea, Nescafe Gold Blend white with or without sugar and Nescafe Gold Blend white decaf with or without sugar.
More beverages vended with Eco Cup will be added throughout the year.
Eco Cup. Making Klix even more appealing.
