We all love biscuits, don’t we? In fact, a recent blog post on our online shop revealed that 99 of every 100 UK households purchase them every week. But whilst biscuits are close to our hearts, the high sugar contents mean they remain very much a guilty pleasure. Pladis, the global snacking company behind McVities, are now trying to rewrite that narrative, and many of their popular biscuits have received a sugar reduction by up to 10%! This is what it means for Coinadrink and Express Refreshments.
A big change for McVities biscuits.
We’d like to bet that you absolutely adore McVities biscuits, because who doesn’t? A recent study from YouGov carried out last year found Chocolate Digestives to be the UK’s most popular biscuit, whilst the McVities brand are within the top 5 purchased on our shores.
Needless to say, a brand that is at the forefront of the industry must keep on top of growing trends. And healthier eating is arguably one of the biggest.
Put simply, sugar is a nutritional devil that many companies can no longer shy away from. You could say sugar is what fat was 20 years ago. This year, two thirds of Europeans say they are looking to reduce their sugar intake, so this big change from Pladis has come at the right time.
In what is a breakthrough in sugar reduction, they have reduced the sugar content by up to 10% in nine of their most popular biscuit varieties, as part of a lengthy project to make their products healthier.
The reformulated biscuits include McVitie’s Original Digestives, McVitie’s Rich Tea, McVitie’s Chocolate Digestives (Milk and Dark), McVitie’s Original Hobnobs, McVitie’s Chocolate Hobnobs (Milk and Dark), McVitie’s Caramel Digestives and McVitie’s Ginger Nuts. These make up over 50% of all McVitie’s sales in the UK.
McVitie’s Original Digestives were already one of the lowest-sugar biscuits available and well below Public Health England’s target of 26.2g of sugar per 100g. However, they now contain just 15.1g of sugar per 100g.
Meanwhile, McVitie’s Rich Tea biscuits now contain just 18.5g of sugar per 100g, their Original Hobnobs now contain 22.9g of sugar per 100g and McVitie’s Milk Chocolate Digestives now contain 28.5g sugar per 100g.
Same great taste. No, really!
You could be forgiven for arguing it’s impossible for a product to taste “the same” if you reduce the sugar content. But you’d be surprised at the lengths Pladis have gone to here.
The new recipes have been achieved through a careful re-balancing of ingredients to reduce sugar and salt, in order to get below, or as close to, Public Health England’s target as possible while maintaining McVitie’s distinctive taste.
Pladis’ Research and Development team tested the change with hundreds of consumers, including a group of self-confessed McVitie’s superfans, to ensure that the reduction in sugar could not be spotted.
They even made sure the biscuits tasted exactly the same when dunked in a cup of tea and used a ‘mechanical dunking arm’ in the laboratory to record the time to break when dunked! Seeing as up to a fifth of people like to dunk their biscuits, this is big news.
